SUBWAY TO SALLY: (2007) Bastard

"Bastard" is a very modern sounding album, reaching and grabbing at various different sub genres of metal to compose itself as a surprisingly solid and highly enjoyable opus of this very heavy type of metal. Think Rammstein and whisk thoroughly into a bowl of diced Die Apokalyptischen Reiter and your hybrid main course meal will be something like "Bastard". This is an album with strong German industrial influences with sprinkles of delicious folk metal weaving its way in and out of songs. Subway To Sally have provided a diverse album, each song sounding a bit more different to the last, a somewhat bizarre album sounding neither melodic nor extreme enough to be considered as just one.
"Meine Seele Brennt" is a suitably powerful opening for a very powerful album, the vocals sound superb making the whole experience sound so much more dramatic and climactic as does the very thick and heavy sound from the multiple instruments used. "Auf Kiel" and "Umbra" show of a slightly different side to the band, the first of these tracks is a fantastic song to stomp along with and both of these songs in fact show off a slightly more melodic side, mainly coming from the impressive vocal work. These are nothing compared to the beautifully crafted "Wehe Stunde" that encompasses more of the slightly more folkish elements with an elegant melody and once again marvellous singing. "Die Trommel" once again brings "Bastard" back into powerful waters and the album follows this schizophrenic trend throughout providing full metal force combined with infectious and catchy melodies until the end. All the lyrics are sang in German which although may alienate a good chunk of non-German speakers in the way that the lyrics will have no meaning, the way they are performed makes the whole album sound that much more menacing and brings us back to the industrial side that bands like Rammstein and Oomph! have been so successful with by sticking to their German roots.
"Bastard" is an album that will appeal to a lot of people, if you love crushingly heavy music, if you love melodies along with a full metal onslaught, and if interesting diverse music always catches your attention then look no further than this epic saga brought to you by Subway To Sally. --- by Baz Anderson, Metalstorm

BURY YOUR DEAD: (2008) Bury Your Dead

Formed in 2001, Bury Your Dead began as a side project of the band Hamartia featuring Brendan "Slim" MacDonald (guitar) and Mark Castillo (Drums). With the metalcore sound of Hamartia growing tiresome to both Slim and Mark, they started writing more moshy and less technical songs in their free time. They recruited Rich Casey (formerly of Groundzero) to play bass and Joe Krewko as vocalist and began playing shows in Massachusetts and Connecticut under the name Bury Your Dead. News of their unbridled energy and destructive live show spread immediately around the East Coast hardcore scenes and the band was courted by Alveran/Eulogy Records. The band recorded and released their debut album titled You Had Me At Hello in March of 2002, borrowed a van, then toured in support of it. After several successful tours Bury Your Dead decided to go their separate ways - Mark (drums) moved back to Philadelphia and began touring with Between The Buried And Me, Rich (bass) went back to running his own screen-printing business, and Slim (guitar) began playing guitar in the band Blood Has Been Shed. --- Wikipedia

CAGE: (2007) Hell Destroyer

This CD is Produced, Engineered, Recorded, and Mixed by Richard "The Guru" Carr and Mastered by 2 time Grammy Award Winner Gavin Lurssen at Lurssen Mastering in Hollywood, CA. Cage's music is best described as new rock metal with influences of the likes of Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Queensryche. This CD is a must for metal fans. It's hard not to note the Judas Priest similarities but there is so much more here. JP never had this kind of double bass drumming and Peck's vocals are sheer power. Tight dueling guitar leads that were obviously learned from the Tipton/Downing school of shred, this album just asks for descriptives. Smokin, scorching, whiplashin', old school in all the best ways, pure metal for the freak who remembers when it was invented. Missing the days of intense power metal that had you banging your head so hard your eyes almost popped out? Here it is revisited.
The story is loosely based on the book of Revelation done in DC comic style. Goofy but well done. A great buy. --- By Brent E. Johnson "Power M. Fan"

DARKNED NOCTURN SLAUGHTERCULT: (2006) Hora Nocturna

After the glorious days of early old school black metal had been infested by Gothic influences, and the betrayal of the Scandinavian forefathers - who apperently changed their allegiance, it was the intention of the two founding members Onielar (Vokills, Git.) as well as Ariovist (Drums) to call forth a band which would contribute it's music to the old traditional vein of black metal. This line-up was reinforced by Velnias (Git.) who joined their ranks after approximately six unholy months. The position of the bass strangler stayed vacant since day one. Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult stands for own satanic and nihilistic beliefs, along with the conspiracy for raw black metal this spirit is carved deep into their hearts. Thus, it seems nearly impossible to find an individual which combines both the skill and the mandatory views of the occult. Only these individuals may join the Slaughtercult.
In the following months the darkened trinity put much effort, sweat and blood into their very first hymns. During this time many tried out for the open bass position, but all were slain, all fell down to be mere cannonfodder. As time passed by it got more clearer day by day that soon the ways of Ariovist and Slaughtercult would go into different directions. While his path led off into a more pathetic human direction - Slaughtercult kept heading straight forward towards the human rank and file in order to slaughter under the banner of blasphemy. Thus during the second half of the year 1999 the first official release The Pest Called Humanity was recorded. --- Go to http://www.slaughtercult.de/biography.php

ELIS: (2006) Griefshire

I guess that everybody has heard the tragic story surrounding the latest ELIS album “Griefshire”, but for all of you, who have not, vocalist Sabine Duenser unexpectedly died shortly after finishing her vocal sections from a cerebral hemorrhage, leaving the band distraught, but they decided to continue on and finished the album in Sabine’s memory. In any way, it is not an easy album to review and judge. The past albums had been a mix of Gothic and Symphonic Metal and the Liechtenstein band has not strayed from this sound and is once more delivering a partly powerful, partly emotional experience, which equally draws from both genres and adds some songs with German lyrics on top of that, which just as on the previous effort adds a special factor to their sound, something that they (again) should have used more often… The album is based on the concept of two brothers, who are searching for revelation in a religious frenzy.
Musically opener “Tales From Heaven Or Hell” sets out with driving double-bass and a full Symphonic Metal onslaught, showcasing the divergence of heavy guitars and pounding drums and Sabine’s soft vocals at their best. And here the band also shows that they seem to have taken in some more traditional Metal in their approach to their music, giving it a bit more of an original edge than before. German “Die Stadt” then brings the other side of ELIS to the fore, the more atmospheric and emotional one, which sets the musical counterpart to the heavy power. Overall it is good to hear that ELIS are more than a one-trick pony, knowing how to shake things up, be it with the surprisingly heavy attack of “Phoenix From The Ashes” or the emotional ballad “How Long” or the aggression of a “The Burning”, which also brings in a few growls. Embedded into a very good production the Liechtenstein-Swiss band also manages to put their songs into the right aural environment. Overall “Griefshire” definitely is the best album this band has released so far and deserves your attention, even without the drama surrounding it. --- by Alex, The Metal Observer

JORN: (2007) Unlocking The Past

Jorn Lande's latest release is a cover album. Some are newly recorded, others remixed from previous albums, and a couple are previously unreleased. Jorn's voice has often been compared to David Coverdale's, so it's only appropriate he does a version of Whitesnake's "Fool For Your Loving." Most of the other songs were originally done in the '70s, and include Jorn's take on Thin Lizzy's "Cold Sweat," Bad Company's "Feel Like Making Love" and Kiss' "Naked City." He also covers two Deep Purple songs: "Burn" and "Perfect Strangers."
Jorn has an excellent voice, and for the most part adds his own twist and flavor to the originals. There's a nice mix of well known and more obscure classic rock songs. It's by no means essential or groundbreaking, but Unlocking The Past is a fun and enjoyable CD. --- from Chad Bowar, About.com

NOCTURNAL BREED: (2007) Fields Of Rot

You know how I’m always complaining that there are a lot of bands that claim to be thrash metal, but actually aren’t? No? Well, I usually am. And if you read my reviews, you’re probably extremely annoyed by now. Finally, something good comes to the table: Nocturnal Breed. The name of the band and their country of origin, Norway, makes one think immediately of a black metal horde, corpse paint and all, ready to distill upon us some bestial satanic riffs with terrible production. Fear not, for such is not the case. Nocturnal Breed make some solid, solid thrash metal, with deep death metal roots. Highly pleasing stuff.
The first real album since 2000’s “Tools of the Trade”, Nocturnal Breed had almost completely faded into oblivion in the metal world. Therefore, it is quite a surprise to see them come back in 2007 and with such force. The riffs here are amazing, truly amazing. The vocals are a lot more death metal-oriented than the rest of the instrumental, which gives the band that extra edge. Listen to “Manskinner” and I dare you, I repeat, I dare you not to headbang. I also love the totally Motörhead/live concert feel of “Iron Bitch”. Awesome stuff.
Totally eighties-ish thrash metal is performed here, and I also love the production, which totally put the guitars way up front and the double bass isn’t overdone, just puts the right touch here and there. Unpretentious, unoriginal, Nocturnal Breed may just have come up with one of the most interesting thrash metal albums of the last few years. Fuck yes. The cover: A badass zombie army kicking serious ass. I love it. Cover of the year.

ERA VULGARIS: (2007) What Stirs Within @VBR

Chris, one of the band members posts on the Megadeth forums, of which I am also a member. He posted about the album coming out and on a whim I bought it. Ever since then its been in my regular rotation, its a great album. The sound reminds me alot of Death, in fact so much so that I had it in my CD changer and a Death album came on an I diden't even notice the difference. The singing on the album varies from two different styles, a very Chuck like shril and clean melodic singing which in all honesty keeps the music interesting.
The music itself does not stay on the boring death metal/thrash forumla, there are several bizarre riffs within, many hinting at blues, which also keeps it interesting. I recommend this album to any death, thrash fan, it is incredible and I hope this band gets a huge following, they deserve it. --- By Steve W. Smith "Chairman Smith"

HELLISHTHRONE: (2007) Light a Candle for the Dead... and a Torch to Burn Their Corpses @192kbps

Apesar da qualidade linear, podemos mencionar como grandes destaques as faixas ''Though Everlasting War, ''For Those.. I Am Not'', ''Everythingn is Vanity'' e ''Rats of Envy'' (que mescla brutalidade com ótimas passagens acústicas). Com este álbum o Hellishthrone tem tudo para se firmar como um dos principais nomes da cena Black Metal brasileira, confira sem medo! --- Ricardo Campos, Road Crew Magazine.

FACEBREAKER: (2008) Dead Rotten and Hungry @VBR

If the heavy metal music industry were to give out Pulitzer-like awards for lyrical content then Facebreaker would surely win for best documentary with their latest tome on the dietary habits of the undead. Straightforward death metal delivers stories of zombies and flesh eaters that would make any horror movie screenwriter jealous with brain-eating rage. For just a sophomore release, Dead, Rotten and Hungry is a well balanced, well constructed death metal attack that shows plenty of old school influences and modern twists. Maddening riffs combine with pummeling drums and bass filling the ears of the undead with groove oriented death metal. There are plenty of nicely timed tempo changes throughout the disc that jump from rapid fire cranial blows to long, slow rending of flesh from the bone. Add to the bloody mix the guttural barks and growls for frontman Roberth Karlsson and a superb production and you’re left with an album that should bring this band to the forefront of the genre on the backs of freshly arisen corpses.
Dead, Rotten and Hungry is one of those albums that simply cannot be ignored. It’s a throwback to a time in death metal when bands wrote campy lyrics and just played without the urge to be more technical than the next guy. This disc has enough groove oriented death metal to make up for all the super technical crap that’s popped up in recent years. It’s straight forward, hammer-to-the-face method of attack is refreshing and much needed. I highly recommend digging this one up. --- Mouth Forwar Review

Lost Cathedral is the best melodic rock album we can get from 1998. My instant impression is that it is Survivor meets prog hard rock. AVANTASIA: (2008) The Scarecrow @320kbps

Tobias Sammet is the Verdi of our age. He has the broadest brush of any composer today. I don't say composer lightly. He is more than a song writer. His arrangements, chord progressions, and lyricism are unmatched by anyone. The musical complexity and variety leave you spell bound, open mouthed and filled with awe. This crazy guy has two bands: EdGuy and Avantasia and there are rumors of a third.
Music pours out of him. At his live performance with EdGuy at BB Kings in New York last fall, you could hardly watch him. He was more electrified than the lead guitar, dancing on the speakers, racing from one side of the stage to the other, screaming out one hit after another. Did I say he does all the vocals in a male range rivaling Celine or Mariah. He could probably match note for note all the whining guitar rifts he writes. So how does this album stack up. His best to date. There isn't a bad cut on the entire album. The other reviewers have mentioned all the best songs, but I encourage a listen to all of them in the order he listed them and pay special attention to "The Toy Master" where Alice Cooper (yes that Alice Cooper) sings the lead vocals. This song should be released by Alice as a come back single. It so rocks and it is so Alice on steroids.
Sammet is a god in Europe and if the USA music world werent so fixated on rap crap instead of Rock, we would all be the better for it. But hey it doesnt matter so much anymore with the music labels so out of touch with their audience. You can get this great rock music anyway. Please pay for it and support Avantasia and Sammet.

ARSIS: (2004) A Celebration Of Guilt @320kbps

I would have never in a million years expected a traditional melodic death revival to come from two guys from Virginia, but it has. While influnenced by bands such as At the Gates, they don't rip them off. Arsis is much faster and more aggresive than anything by At the Gates. The vocalist/bass/guitar player sounds a little bit like Tomas Lindberg and the drummer is one of the best and fastest I've ever heard. If Amazon had half star rating this would probably get a 4.5 since there are a few downsides. Obviously, two people aren't going to come up with as diverse of material as 4 or 5 and as a result the songs sound somewhat similar and the production leaves something to be desired. Other than that this is a killer album. Props to Arsis and Insomnium for staying true.

BLUE OYSTER CULT: (1995) Workshop Of the Telescope (DCD)

Blue Öyster Cult was long in need of a thorough career retrospective, and this is it. Thirty-two tracks filling up two discs with a total running time of 154:46, Workshop of the Telescopes traces BÖC through 14 years as the kings of lite metal, 1972-1986. Actually, as annotator Arthur Levy notes, there are at least two phases in that era. The first, running through 1974, includes the classic first two albums, Blue Öyster Cult and Tyranny and Mutation, when BÖC was one of the few acts in those pre-punk days bucking the trend toward soft rock without indulging in the more grotesque aspects of heavy metal. This material takes up disc one. Disc two leads off with "(Don't Fear) The Reaper," which launched the second phase of the band's career, when it sought to balance its hard-rocking approach (heard especially in concert) with pop accessibility. Since this period was marked by uneven material, it is ripe for compiling, and the selection here is good. On the whole, Workshop of the Telescopes lives up to Levy's description of it as "the ultimate BÖC anthology." It's about time. --- by William Ruhlmann, AMG
